The Tar Heel Reader is designed for beginning readers.
Stories are for beginning readers of all ages - so some of the subject matter can be tailored to be more appropriate for teenagers, than for young children.

This site is a way to 'give something back', to help create something that will, I believe, have a big impact on the study of Latin. Simply having a large number of easy books in Latin on a shared platform, on the bookshelf with English books, will introduce Latin to a whole new body of students - this in itself can only be a good thing.

Thanks for continuing to spread the word, Evan. BTW, do you know of any way to take a story that someone else has written in another language and simply representing it in Latin on Tar Heel?

hi Bob, YES - it is very easy - any time you are looking at a story at TarHeel, just click on SET UP, upper left-hand corner, and you will see a page that gives information about "Translating/Rewriting" with a Create a new version of this book link. There is also information there about downloading the book for viewing offline in various formats. :-)

Maybe not the Emperor, I'd settle for senator, along with the others, like Laura Gibbs, Bob Patrick, Andrew Reinhardt, Nancy Llewellyn, and a score of others who are active in online Latin. It would be an interesting exercise to compile a list of the people who contribute to Latin online, and what they have contributed.....

Evan, Laura, Vale!
I find Laura's readings to be fantastic, Laura, great to be able to put a face to your name.
I am still building my vocabulary, and grinding on my speech, so painful is it.
That the raccoons that raid my house, fearless of my yelling and howling.
Flee in terror at my Latin..........Well! Latin has proven useful.
Whodathunkit?

What I'd love to see/hear, and at my level have no biz in trying, is conversation, mp3 Dl's
" hi how are you? fine and you, nice day, say what is your dog doing to my leg"
To get the language living.
Any links? thoughts?
Many thanks to all, Latin for me, would have only been a dream, with out your great work.

Hi Blake, I'm so excited that these online materials are helpful in your Latin adventures. There are other folks much more active than me in the "living Latin" world (I regularly get into trouble on the various listserves for referring to Latin as a dead language)... I read Latin out loud all the time for my own pleasure and to help in my understanding, but I'm not someone who has concentrated on my accent (I've got a very unreconstructed American accent, not a Roman one by any means, ha ha), and I'm also not someone who does conversational Latin as a hobby (I've worked on living languages for my foreign conversation adventures, not Latin)...
But what's great about the online world is that there is room for EVERYBODY to make their contributions.
As you may have seen from the various notices here and there, summer is a big time for various Latin conventions and spoken Latin events... with the online tools getting easier and easier and easier to use, I sure hope that some of those spoken Latin events will develop a virtual presence, too, reaching out to people who cannot actually be there in the same time/place as the convention itself.
It's very easy to put up videos and share them here at the eClassics.Ning.com site - even just simple videos that people record with their cellphones. I'm hoping there will be LOTS of such videos from the conventions this summer by those in attendance.

Ha, Laura - I agree, Latin is a dead Language, but that doesn't mean we can't speak it :) , or read it, or draw pictures about it......
That, for me, is part of the pleasure.....
It is all one big mixing pot, this online Latin world, and everyone has their own focus. It is really interesting to see people's personalities emerge in the little taar heel readers.
On that point, do you think it might be an idea to make a list of them over on the latinbestpractices wiki, and next to each, have a little review - especially to note the few that are in doglatin - there is at least one such.

Hi Evan, posting reviews and notes and such I think is a great idea. I had started to write up some pages for my readers - but a place to make notes about ANY of the readers, not just the ones you authored, is a great idea! I'll go make a page like that now. I absolutely respect Gary's not giving in to the temptations of feature-creep there at the TarHeel site, but the one thing I really miss is a comment space for each reader, something simple like the comment space here at Ning where every photo and video uploaded has room for comments. Anyway, let me go make a comments page at BestPractices and we can start commenting away! I think by sharing some assessments of the readers, it could help people be more self-aware as they create them. :-)
