Lisa Nicholas commented on Latinum Institute's blog post Fluency in Latin
"I wonder if you are correct in saying that there are only 20 fluent Latin speakers in the world (where did you get this number?). I believe -- but I may well be mistaken -- that there are still academic settings (European) in which Latin is still…"

Lisa Nicholas replied to Pacific Girl's discussion Spoken latin taught in schools?
"I agree with you that learning to speak Latin would certainly help in all areas of use (reading, writing, hearing, etc.) There is one curriculum, by Hans Ober (Lingua Latina per se illustrata) that uses the "natural language" acquisition…"

Me, Before Learning Latin

"See how pale, wan, and wistful I was before learning Latin? I had to subsist on salads of modern languages: wisps of French, slices of Spanish, the occasional crouton of Geman -- with, of course, hefty chunks of English (grilled a l'anglaise,…"

Me, looking forward to learning Latin

"Latin still lay in the future -- Kathy and I were interested in codes & ciphers at the time."

Lisa Nicholas commented on John E. DuBois's group All-Things-Cicero
"Cicero was my kind of guy: a patriot in the best sense, he didn't much care if important people found him an obnoxious blowhard, and if he couldn't get his point through one way he tried another. I think the Rome of his day didn't…"

Conversational Latin

For those interested in learning Latin viva voce, not only so they can speak it, but so they can learn how to 'think in Latin', and so read more fluently.See More

About Me:
I teach/have taught literature, humanities, and Latin at the college level. Over the past five years, I've taught all of these at the University of Southern Indiana, but now I'm looking for another job -- I'd love to teach more Latin! I'd particularly like to improve my own active use of Latin (speaking and writing), and be able to incorporate these in my teaching. Having studied a number of modern & medieval European language (and achieved fluency in one or two), I want to improve my facility with Latin, and start learning Greek. Currently I am teaching Latin to adult learners at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Arlington, TX.
