H-m-m-m. Hard to say how long I took to learn Greek. I took two years of Ancient Greek in college, but continued to read in Ancient Greek off and on over the 25 years since then. It was only last year that I started getting serious about the Modern stuff, and there are still odd gaps in my knowledge. But such is only to be expected when relying entirely on my own efforts, not having the benefit of a formal class or teacher. Just to make things more confusing, I am picking up Katharevousa as well, with readings such as http://www.myriobiblos.gr/texts/greek/moutsoulas_basil.html
