Latin via Ovid

Hello-Salvete,

I have decided to learn Latin using "Latin via Ovid". I will be going it alone, as there are no adult Latin courses in my area. Does anyone have experience with this book and do they/you recomend the CD's that you could get as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Leo, that is not a book I have used but I have some materials online that might be of help - they are Latin proverbs, and I grouped them by grammatical features so that you could use them with any textbook, regardless of how the textbook presents the materials - they are 4000 proverbs, organized into groups, starting at Group 1 here, first declension nouns and adjectives only:

When I taught Latin, I always shared lots and lots of proverbs with my students. Proverbs have the advantage of MEANING something... whereas vocabulary lists by themselves can get kind of boring!

Yes, we use "Latin via Ovid" as a text here at John Cabot University in Rome.

All three teachers who have used it have given it high marks.  If students do

not continue Latin - horribile dictu - after the second semester,. they will have

at least read many of Ovid's stories.  If they do, they can begin reading Ovid

(and Vergil) at the end of the second semester in the original text.  The text

has many valuable features and the workbook is an excellent companion
