Fable of the Day (Greek): The Man and The Viper

The Man Picking Up The Viper = Perry 176 (English translation: Oxford Aesop 440)

Ὥρᾳ χειμῶνος ἔχις τις πλησίον ὁδοῦ κατέκειτο καὶ τῇ τοῦ ψύχους σφοδρότητι ἐκινδύνευε διαφθαρῆναι. ἀνὴρ δέ τις παρερχόμενος καὶ ταύτην ἰδὼν κατῴκτειρε, καὶ ἄρας τῆς γῆς τῷ ἰδίῳ κόλπῳ ἐναπέθετο. ἡ δὲ ἔχις διαθερμανθεῖσα εὐθὺς καιρίῳ δήγματι τὸν ἄνδρα ἀπέκτεινεν.

Οὗτος δηλοῖ ὡς ὁ φύσει κακός, κἂν ἀγαθόν τι παρὰ τινοσοῦν ἐπισπάσαιτο, τῷ εὐεργέτῃ μᾶλλον κακὰ ἀποδίδωσιν.
