Fable of the Day (Greek): The Hen Laying Golden Eggs

The Hen Laying Golden Eggs = Perry 87 (English translation: Oxford Aesop 434)

Ἀνήρ τις ὄρνιν ἐκέκτητο χρυσοῦν ᾠὸν καθ’ ἑκάστην αὐτῷ τίκτουσαν. ὁ δὲ μὴ τῷ καθημερινῷ ἐκείνῳ ἐπαρκούμενος κέρδει, ἀλλ’ ἀφρόνως τοῦ πλείονος ὀρεγόμενος, τὴν ὄρνιν κατέθυσεν· ἐδόκει γὰρ ἐν τοῖς ἐγκάτοις αὐτῆς θησαυρῷ τινι ἐντυχεῖν. καὶ μηδὲν ὅλως ἐφευρὼν καθ’ ἑαυτὸν ἔλεξεν ὡς “ἐλπίδι θησαυροῦ ἐπερειδόμενος, καὶ τοῦ ἐν χερσὶ κέρδους ἐξέπεσον.”

Οὗτος δηλοῖ ὡς οἱ πολλοί, τῶν πλειόνων ὀρεγόμενοι, καὶ τῶν ὀλίγων ἐκπίπτουσι.

Ἀνήρ τις

ὄρνιν ἐκέκτητο

χρυσοῦν ᾠὸν

καθ’ ἑκάστην

αὐτῷ τίκτουσαν.

ὁ δὲ

μὴ τῷ καθημερινῷ ἐκείνῳ ἐπαρκούμενος κέρδει,

ἀλλ’ ἀφρόνως τοῦ πλείονος ὀρεγόμενος,

τὴν ὄρνιν κατέθυσεν·

ἐδόκει γὰρ

ἐν τοῖς ἐγκάτοις αὐτῆς

θησαυρῷ τινι

ἐντυχεῖν.

καὶ

μηδὲν ὅλως ἐφευρὼν

καθ’ ἑαυτὸν ἔλεξεν ὡς

“ἐλπίδι θησαυροῦ ἐπερειδόμενος,

καὶ τοῦ ἐν χερσὶ κέρδους

ἐξέπεσον.”

Οὗτος δηλοῖ ὡς

οἱ πολλοί,
