Benefits/Drawbacks of iPod use for language learning

There are now several sites for oral/aural Latin, including podcasts and downloadable poems and prose passages. How practical is it to assign Latin listening homework via MP3 player (e.g. iPod) to students in place of traditional language lab assignments? This is, of course, assuming that an oral Latin component is taught in class, which may or may not be the case.
