I will be leading a workshop in how to use Second Life as a practical pedagogical tool for practicing oral Latin. The workshop will include instruction on how to install and activate real-time audio fro Second Life, how to chat, how to record machinima, and will culminate in a real-time, in-world demonstration of conversational Latin within this virtual environment.
This workshop is part of the Re:LIVE '08 conference being held at the Open University in Milton Keynes, England, of which you can learn more about
here.
If you would like to participate, you will need to have downloaded and installed the Second Life client on your own PC and have created an avatar (setting up a Second Life account is free at
secondlife.com). I can email you the SLURL (aka coordinates) to where the speakers and moderator will assemble. We will have a practice session a couple of days prior to the event.
Please send me a message here through eClassics or drop me a line at areinhard@bolchazy.com if you would like to participate. This will be the first time Latinists have formally gathered in-world for a real-time dialogue in Latin within Second Life, and will bring additional attention to SL as a learning tool, and to Latin as remaining contemporary. I anticipate placing the recorded machinima on YouTube after the conference.
Thanks,
Andrew Reinhard
