What do you think about teaching latin in schools like other languages are taught? I think it would certainly improve comprehension. I have trouble writing things that I can read easily., and the latin course that I do only looks at written latin. I would also like to know if there are any other online sites where I could learn latin in a similar way that I'm learning french?
I agree with you that learning to speak Latin would certainly help in all areas of use (reading, writing, hearing, etc.) There is one curriculum, by Hans Ober (Lingua Latina per se illustrata) that uses the "natural language" acquisition method used in most modern language pedagogy, but I don't know how widely it is used. I know that it is used at Wyoming Catholic College, which is where I learned about it. I had a chance yet to use it in the classroom, but I'd like to try it, first chance I get.
You're right about the fact that there is actually no need to speak latin- since it is not the language of science any more -which makes science a lot more accessable for everyone else. I haven't been able to find the Hans Ober course, but I'll keep looking.
If there aren't any more comments I'll close this discussion in a week. thanks!
