Nothing to do with computers, but...
Back when I was in Wheelock class, the lecturer was explaining the meaning of "ambo" and pointing out that one should beware of mistaking it for a certain first-conjugation verb as one student had done the previous year:
"...so 'felices ambo' means 'they make a lovely couple'. It does NOT mean 'I shall love cats'."

Et sedebit conflans, et emundans argentum

A friend of mine emailed me this earlier today, and it's so perfect for Ash Wednesday that I couldn't resist reposting it here.

There was a group of women in a Bible study on the book of Malachi. As they were studying chapter three, they came across verse three which says: He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. This verse puzzled the women and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out about the process o… Continue

Anselm goes 1337

A propos of the Anselm reading group that starts, me ducente, this week on Latin Study, I found this deliciously geeky tidbit on one of the LiveJournal communities:

St. Anselm in a nerd chatroom by dracsmith

chatroom: Monster Mania

mecha1989: Hey, what if Mothra could breathe in outer space?
ranmasux: Dude! That would roxxor. What if he could breathe in outer space AND trave…

Limerick

There was an old vicar from Kew,
Who kept a small cat in a pew.
He taught it to speak
Alphabetical Greek,
But it never got further than µ.

Apparently Andrew's late feline was streets ahead of this one with regard to the pronunciation of classical languages.

(I wish I knew who authored this limerick so that I could provide proper attribution. I learned it from one of my Latin lecturers way back in my undergrad days, but nobody seemed to know who deserved credit f… Continue

Another setting of Resonet in Laudibus

A propos of Laura's most recent post in her Christmas songs series, there is also a rather lovely 19th century setting of this carol by Anselm Schubiger (1815-1888). A PDF of the music is downloadable via the ChoralWiki page. This setting uses only three verses of the… Continue

Have you seen the movie Stealing Heaven about Abelard and Heloise? I thought it was good!

hi Raphaela, I think it's great that you posting Abelard: super!!! I taught a class many years ago where we read some Heloise, and it was difficult, but the students really enjoyed it - here are the readings they did from Heloise, if you are interested! ;-)
