Hometown/Institution:: Dripping Springs High School, 30 miles southwest of Austin, TX

About Me:: I am currently teaching high school Latin at a school that had an incipient program that was about to be abandoned. I taught Latin for 6 years at an inner city middle school, and before that was more or less a stay at home mom, though I was also editor for the Texas Classical Association. I have served on many committees and in a variety of capacities with TCA, ACL, and CAMWS, being the Chair of the Committee for the Promotion of Latin at one time.

My current teaching job and my children keep me from being as active in organizations as I used to be, but I hope to have a "come back" one day. I miss all the work I used to be able to get done. There was something very rewarding about the amount of service I used to do and the feeling that I was helping a lot of people.

I keep a t-shirt/button/poster/mug shop at CafePress called Anima Altera. It is my second self, that other side of me--the creative side that would love to do nothing but develop Latin things. I'm not a brilliant artist but I have an eye for a good photo and can be creative. I am most please with the mini-buttons and the posters of Pompeii and Rome that are on the site. What little money I make is usually spent buying stuff to give away to folks at things like CAMWS or to my students. (http://www.cafepress.com/animaaltera)

I also keep a blog so I can rant about things Latin and teaching related. It started out as a place to talk about what I do, what works and what doesn't--a place where future and new teachers could get an idea of the reality of teaching. I have ranted a time or two about things that aren't totally related to Latin (and people have gotten all over my case about it!). I think everyone should read the reply. It is the most thorough response they've given yet, and I hate to say that I understand what they are doing, and think we need to start making other plans.

Personally, I think we need to talk about how to keep more students enrolled in Latin for longer/how to get more kids into AP. And if we have kids that want more after that, perhaps we should have it geared toward the SAT II test somehow, but I know nothing of that.

The fact remains that our "cheese" has been moved, and perhaps it's time to adapt and not complain that things aren't as we want. (See the book "Who Moved my Cheese?"
