The Latinum Institutehas rebuilt its website, making it far easier for students to find the materials in our ever growing catalogue.

Latinum started as a podcast in 2006, and over the period 2006 to 2008, the Adler Latin Language structured immersion course was developed and produced.

This is a complete Latin course, and has over 190 hours of Latin tuition in audio. Student difficulties have been addressed and at every stage, and whenever an issue was unclear, the section was re-recorded to address the problem, and re-issued. The end result is a comprehensive Latin audio course that can be used by all students, even those who think that a difficult language like Latin cannot be studied alone. The Latin Institute's unique structured programme makes Latin self study possible and achievable.

The best way to learn Latin is by using an audio course. You will learn Latin grammar, but most of the actual learning will be inductive - you will learn from the thousands of examples and lessons we have created specially for you, and as you work your way through the huge structured audio library, you will find your Latin knowledge and ability level will develop rapidly.

The Latinum Institute moved to Patreon in 2017, and since then 1,500 students have used Latinum's resources. Latinum also has a Youtube Channel with 30,000 subscribers.

The course was first released via the podcast, as user feedback was needed to develop and adjust the way the course was presented ; and the course has been re-recorded once already.

Latinum has been dealing with the thorny question of 'How to Learn Latin' efficiently and thoroughly for over a decade now, and our experience has lead to the development of a wide range of audio course materials to guide you through your study of the language.

Unlike the Cambridge Latin Course, Rosetta Stone or the Lingua Latina course of Oerberg, you will not have to spend any money of textbooks; Unlike Duolingo, the Latin Institute's course is a complete, multi-year course.

The Latinum Institute only uses out of copyright books - these are updated and modernised in audio where necessary; the end result is an economical multi-year Latin course that will help you gain actual command of this language, and become a fluent reader of it.

Latinum uses Patreon to host its files and process payments, so there is an online Latin app to learn Latin, via Patreon.

Many students who have struggles with learning Latin for years have found that Latinum has finally helped them achieve their goal. We believe we have the most developed and complete online audio Latin course available online.

The course consists of formal lessons, and a large amount of specialist immersion material.

These resources can be broken down into a variety of categories:

1. Formal Latin courses in audio. The Adler Course has additional utilities developed by our students, such as complete ANKI flashcard backs and Clozemaster exercises.

2. Introductory audio readers for beginners read in Latin-English-Latin. These also have Latin-only versions.

3. Shadowing recordings, in Latin, where you listen to the Latin, and read along in a published interlinear text, or other text that has a parallel literal English translation.

4. Reverse shadowing recordings in English, where you listen to the English, while reading along yourself in the Latin. This is an excellent method for students at a variety of levels.

5. Latin paraphrases - these are audio recordings in a simplified Latin, where ambiguities are resolved and the Latin is re-written to make it reasier for a student to access the text; these are a prelude to reading the text in the original.

6. Latin audiobooks and storybooks at a variety of levels.

7. Tar Heel Storybooks,; some are available on Youtube with audio.

8. Specialist vocabulary study audio files, such as 'Swallowing the Dictionary'.

9. Latin texts in the original form presented as audiobooks.

10. Latin texts in the vernacular - English translations of Latin texts as audiobooks.

The Latinum Institute presents its materials for ease of access in catalogues for Beginners' Latin, Beginners' Plus Latin, Intermediate Latin, Intermediate Plus Latin, and Advanced Latin.

There are separate catalogues for Hebrew, Aramaic and Ancient Greek,

I have found a solution to having a stable home for the many hundreds of hours of Latin audio, including the mammoth Adler Audio Course; the crowdfunding platform, Patreon.

Unlike Kickstarter, Patreon is suited for ongoing projects, and is particularly well suited to a niche project such as Latinum, with its focus on extended Latin audio in restored classical pronunciation.

I have hosted the entire catalogue of existing material here, and am currently once again regularly producing new audio resources.

For many centuries, this text was the first Classical work put into the hands of a beginning student of Latin, due to the clarity of Eutropius' style. It fell out of favour in the late 1900's.

Flavius Eutropius was a historian who lived in the late 4th century.
The Breviarium Historiae Romanae is a complete compendium, in ten books, of Roman history from the foundation of the city to the accession of Valens. It was compiled with considerable care from the best accessible authorities, and is written generally with impartiality, and in a clear and simple style.

I have also started to publish my own Serial and Oral Latin Course. The first three sections of this course are now online, and it is proving popular. The course contains a teacher-student manual, a workbook for written exercises and an audio language-lab accompaniment. Lessons are short mini-lessons, each unit is comprised of 50 mini-lessons, called 'steps'.

This traditional Latin textbook, dating from the very early 20th Century, was produced in audio in November 2009. Many students still enjoy using it, and it is popular with people studying Latin at home. My view is that it is useful to use a variety of textbooks; not every author explains every point the same way. Also, reading or listening to a variety of explanations of the same points is good, and increases the chance of learning the material thoroughly. D'Ooge uses more formal grammatical terminology than either Underwood or Adler. His method is known as 'grammar-translation'. This audio course adds a third dimension to his textbook, turning it into a comprehensible input source as well. D'Ooge's textbook also comes with a mini Latin reader with a graded selection of prose in basic Latin. The pdf that the audio was produced from is provided for your convenience.

This method teaches grammar intuitively, through the deconstructed text of Caesar, which is built up line by line, each new line only introducing one new lexical item, or one new grammatical point, which is highlighted in the Latin and in the translation with italic font.

This text is a pleasant introduction to the Latin language, and would also benefit more experienced students, who may have a very limited range of vocabulary.

The Vestibulum gives an essential foundation in the core root words of Latin, enough to begin to start to speak about some things, and to read a variety of very simple texts. The Romans themselves used simple dialogues and fables to teach their children, or foreigners ( we have textbooks from the second century for teaching Latin to Greeks) - so throwing out this model, an eminently sensible one of slowly increasing complexity of the texts, aiming at fluency in 5 to 6 years - has lead to an antire generation being unable to read Latin without translating it into the vernacular in their heads, and poorly equipped to express themselves in the language. Comenius' Vestibulum imitates these ancient Roman educational texts, as do his grammar texts, which are written in a pleasant , clear and light-hearted Latin style.

The Vestibulum contains a vocabulary of 1000 root words.

Comenius' Vestibulum

Latinum on YouTube now has over 3 000 subscribers. I have decided that from now on, whatever I produce for the audio podcast, I will also re-record for the youTube site. I had been doing this before, but more haphazardly. My general approach to my suite of websites is now more systematic - one audio book at a time. At present, each youTube video gets fewer downloads than each audio podcast, but as I develop the YouTube site, I expect this will change.

A few milestones were passed this week - Firstly, my booklet 'Declensions' has turned out to be the most popular title on the Tar Heel reader website, being over 50% more popular than the next title on the list according to Gary Bishop, who runs the site. It says something, that a dry book on declensions has beaten the Alphabet, Obama, and Lady Gaga!

Secondly, my YouTube Latin course just passed its 200,000th upload view.

Schola now has 1,746 members, and continues to grow at a steady pace.

Latinum is also still proving popular, with between 3 and 5 thousand file downloads per day. Total downloads since inception in 2007 is well over 7 million.

Comenius arranged his course in a gradated series:

1. The Vestibulum, with an associated grammar for beginners

1a. The Orbis Sensualium Pictus - an amplified form of the Vestibulum.

2. The Janua Linguarum, with an associated grammar and lexicon.

3. The Janua Linguarum Aurea, with an associated grammar and colloquia.

4. The Atrium, with an associated grammar.

5. A Lexicon wholly in Latin.

How could the student use this material?

1. His or her first step, should be to listen to the Vestibulum in bilingual audio, until the work can be fully understood in the Latin only. This will mean listening to the book several times.

Once the student has done this, he or she needs to read the work - there are some digital scans available through the Europeana portal. Simply type "vestibulum" into the search box, the first three or four texts are examples in Latin and Hungarian. These texts can be downloaded as pdf files.

1a. The Orbis Sensualium Pictus is your next step. (If you cannot download the Vestibulum you could begin with the Orbis Pictus) You will notice that you have not been exposed to any formal grammar - this will follow, once you have started to expose yourself to the language, and build up an intuitive structure, and a good vocabulary.

The Orbis Sensualium Pictus is available in audio in a bilingual format on latinum, and also, for revision, in a monolingual format. There are many examples of this text in many languages parallel to the Latin available on google books, europeana, and archive.org

This text needs to be listened to and re-read many dozens of times - it is a long text, and will give you a rich vocabulary of 1000's of words - preparing you for reading a wide range of texts in Latin.

2. Comenius' introductory grammar is not yet available in bilingual form - this text can at present only be accessed through the CAMENA scan of Comenius Complete Educational Works (Opera Didactica Omnia)

here is the link to the introductory grammar: Scroll down to the bottom of the page to locate it, and then click through to read each page.

Once you have studied the Vestibulum and the Orbis Sensualium Pictus, and feel you know the vocabulary, you should consolidate what you know by reading the following texts, which cover the same ground, with differing degrees of variation and amplification of the material.

Reading these subsidiary texts is a useful self-check, to see if you have actually learned the material in the Orbis. If you are struggling, return to the Orbis Pictus, and re-read it a few more times.
